Real ProgressIn the early months of 1998, the only therapy Katie received was for speech. She would not be formally diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome for another year, but she obviously had a language deficit and so we acted on what we knew. So rapid was Katie's progress that we began to think the staff of our Speech & Language Center could walk on water. By spring, these gifted, caring professionals had gotten to know Katie well enough to suggest other therapies, which they felt would be beneficial. The director was planning a summer camp program which would include Sensory Integration and occupational therapy as well as speech therapy. It would also be a good opportunity for Katie to interact with other children. We enrolled Katie immediately and, for the first time, began to feel optimistic about her future and our own.
